If you have lived on Mount Desert Island for even one full season, you already know the July–August calendar is not really a calendar. It is a rhythm. Certain nights of the week belong to certain rooms, certain Saturdays belong to certain lots, and the visitors who show up in August are still trying to figure out what residents have penciled in since May. This year the rhythm is a little louder than usual, mostly because the 1932 Criterion Theatre is booking heavier than it has in a long time.
That heavier booking is the story worth tracking this summer. In April 2025, the Harper House Music Foundation acquired and reopened The 1932 Criterion Theatre after many years of operational uncertainty, and the difference is now visible on the marquee. What follows is how to read it.
The Criterion's July and August, at a glance
The Cottage Street theater has stacked its summer with touring names in a way that rewards buying tickets early and clustering nights out. Here is the confirmed run for the next eight weeks.

A few things residents should note about how this room actually operates. The box office opens 60 minutes prior to curtain, and you can purchase or pick up tickets there on the day of the show; parking is available in the municipal lot on Rodick Street behind the theatre, and the main entrance is on Cottage Street. The Rodick lot fills fast on Saturday evenings, so if you are coming in from Town Hill or the quiet side, budget for that walk. No outside food or drink is permitted, but the concession stand carries locally made candies, popcorn with real butter, and there is a bar with beer and wine upstairs.
The weekly grid nobody publishes
The Criterion nights are the anchors visitors will hear about. The grid underneath belongs to residents. If you were building a standing summer week from scratch, here is what is already running.
- Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. — The Move Free Run Club (Acadia Chapter) meets from the Bar Harbor Village Green. Year-round, easy to join mid-summer.
- Wednesday evenings — Open mic night at Fogtown Brewing.
- Thursday evenings — Monthly trivia at Fogtown Brewing Company Bar Harbor, with trivia nights on Thursday evenings and live music in the beer garden on Friday evenings filling out the back half of the week.
- Saturday morning — The Ellsworth Farmers Market is now held in the parking lot of Fogtown Brewery Saturday mornings beginning at around nine. Worth the short drive off-island if you are tired of the downtown crowd.
- Sunday, 7:30 a.m. — Move Free Run Club meets every Sunday morning from Choco Latte. Coffee after is not optional.
- Sunday, 4:00–5:30 p.m. — Chess club at Choco-latte in Bar Harbor, most Sundays, good for beginners and intermediates alike.
None of this shows up on a chamber calendar looking three weeks ahead. It is the connective tissue between the marquee weekends, and it is the reason August feels manageable to someone who lives here and overwhelming to someone who doesn't.
What is back on Main Street, and what has moved
The 2026 seasonal reopenings are worth mapping if only because two useful spots have changed footprints since last summer.
Geddy's has opened for its 52nd season at 19 Main Street, which for the purposes of a summer week means the circular bar is back in play as a place to land between a walk on the shore path and whatever is happening on Cottage Street. Galyn's, a local favorite since 1986, is open April 2 through November 28, 2026. The Looking Glass Restaurant, next to the Bluenose Inn and the Wonder View Inn, reopened for the season on May 9, 2026, which is the breakfast-with-a-view option worth remembering when houseguests want a slower morning.
The relocation to watch is Salsa Verde Grill. The restaurant is now at 191 Main Street, having moved from its original 270 Main location in early 2025, with hours Wednesday through Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. It is one of the few Bar Harbor kitchens that stays open year-round, which matters more in February than in July, but it also means the summer wait is real. Reservations are worth making early through Resy or directly on the website. And if the after-show crowd from a Wednesday Punch Brothers date needs a late bite in walking distance of Cottage Street, this is the answer that residents are already using.
For the morning side of the day, The Stadium and Coffee Hound continue to operate as one space. Coffee Hound is a veteran-founded, woman-owned roastery operating inside The Stadium, a bakery run by a father-and-son team, and the two brands function as one spot. The Stadium side serves popovers with blueberry jam and maple butter, plus crepes, blueberry donuts, and breakfast sandwiches. That is a legitimate alternative to the Jordan Pond House popover pilgrimage on days when the park's east side is going to be a parking problem.
The Cadillac Summit move residents make
Which brings us to the timing exercise that separates people who live here from people who just visit. Vehicle reservations are required to drive Cadillac Summit Road from May 20 through October 25, 2026, and the fee is $6.00 per vehicle, non-refundable under all circumstances including missed reservations, weather, and emergency closures unless the reservation is cancelled at least 48 hours before the start time.
The number that matters, though, is the release split. 30% of the Cadillac Summit Road sunrise and daytime vehicle reservations are available for purchase at 10 a.m. ET 90 days in advance of the desired reservation date, and 70% are available for purchase at 10 a.m. ET two days in advance. Read that ratio a second time. The bulk of inventory does not exist ninety days out. It appears at 10 a.m. Eastern, forty-eight hours before you want to go. That is why the resident play in July is almost never the 90-day booking. It is a Sunday morning at 10 a.m. sharp, laptop open, refreshing for a Tuesday sunrise slot when a niece flies in from Boston.
A few adjacent facts worth having in your head when guests ask. Hiking or biking to the top of Cadillac Mountain is free and no reservation is required, and there is a separate $35-per-car park entrance fee that provides access for seven days. Vehicles over 21 feet long including bike racks and hitch attachments, RVs, and trailers are prohibited on Cadillac Summit Road. Cell service is unreliable in the park, so screenshot the QR code before you leave the driveway. And if the two-day window slams shut, Oli's Trolley and Acadia National Park Tours both offer Cadillac Summit stops as part of their scheduled tours, which is a quieter workaround than most people realize.

Reading the season as a whole
Put the three layers together and the shape of a Bar Harbor summer week emerges. The Criterion is doing the heavy lifting on the evening side, in a way it has not since before the pandemic, thanks to the Harper House stewardship. The weekday morning and afternoon grid at Fogtown, Choco Latte, and the Village Green remains steady and quiet enough to belong to residents. The Cadillac reservation window rewards patience and a good sense of when to open a browser tab, not planning three months ahead. And Main Street's returning kitchens, plus Salsa Verde's move up to 191, mean the after-show and pre-run options are actually stronger than they were a year ago.
If you host family or clients over the next eight weeks, this is the calendar to work from. The July 22 through July 28 stretch, with Punch Brothers, Patty Griffin, and Rhiannon Giddens in the same six-night window, is the one to build a visit around.
